Ready for ESPR 2024: syspro supports the Digital Product Passport

New EU standards for sustainability and recyclability

New challenges for fashion producers and retailers: With the definition of the "EU Strategy for Sustainable and Recyclable Textiles" and the "Eco-Design for Sustainable Products Regulation" (ESPR), the European Union will enforce significant changes in the management of supply chains and usage cycles.

The aim is to establish the new legally valid standards by 2024 and to drive forward the development of the necessary technological standards for practical application.

It is already obvious that users of syspro RFID solutions are technically well prepared for this development and can expect a smooth integration.

The heart of future ESPR platforms: The Digital Product Passport

For the implementation of the ESPR, a new digital ecosystem will be needed in the future in which product information can be stored, retrieved, and managed according to standardized criteria over the entire life cycle of each item.

We are seeing the emergence of a system in which manufacturers, logistics providers and retailers will be obliged to provide and continuously update a defined set of master and transaction data for each product: the Digital Product Passport (DPP).

This information should be accessible via QR codes as well as via NFC chip or RFID tag.

Data and technologies: The state of the art

The European Commission is already pushing ahead with the definition of the technical standards for the Digital Product Passport in parallel with the work on the ESPR itself.

For example, the Commission is funding the "Collaborative Initiative for a Standards-based Digital Product Passport for Stakeholder-Specific Sharing of Product Data for a Circular Economy" (CIRPASS), a platform for exchange between competence holders (including GS1 and ISO) and stakeholders.

The intent is to clearly define the DPP with proven benefit to the circular economy. The assignment includes an open protocol for data exchange, consensus on key data, a defined vocabulary, and roadmaps for piloting.

Ready to go with syspro: RFID systems and Cloud Information Hub

Retail solutions from syspro are already the optimal basis for mapping the future EU Product Passport.

For years, our systems have been designed to create, read and update product information easily and decentrally.

In addition, there are the field-proven data interfaces through which this information can be synchronized with the syspro Cloud Information Hub or exchanged with any other portals in a secure and self-determined manner.
