Farewell to Tine

tinesw

It was to be expected and yesterday it happened. Christiane "Tine" Römer, our head of marketing, passed away in the early morning hours of May 10, 2020 - quietly and mostly without pain despite her serious illness.

It is difficult for me to grasp my feelings. She was a long-time employee, companion and good friend.
When I remember her, it is as a kind-hearted, honest and fun-loving optimist who did not give up, no matter how difficult times were. Whether in her personal life or at work, she never let it get her down.

We had already worked together in companies before syspro and got to know and appreciate each other. When she started at syspro in 2009, the situation after the economic and financial crisis was not easy either. With her work, she helped to develop syspro, even though, or perhaps because, she was not so technically proficient, since she had studied cultural studies.

With her empathy, she dug into our subject matter, asked questions until she understood it and wrote an understandable, interesting article out of what we engineers served up dryly. Her artistic skills did us good.

Whether it was trade fairs or syspro events, the design of the website or our magazines, she organized and thus shaped our appearance to the outside world, yes, she shaped us. She also overcame her technology shyness and dabbled in social media. For our syspro magazine, she discovered Liam as a model and pushed her through against initial resistance.

She was a wonderful person, of course with weaknesses, like all of us. With her honesty she was able to disarm others, could fight resolutely for her ideas and was still open to ideas of others. And so, both professionally and privately, it was very nice to have her around.

The last time I spoke to her was just under a month ago, when she already knew that there was no more chance. I was very impressed by her confidence and when I sent her samples of my guitar exercises, she was happy and motivated me: "I'm looking forward to seeing your progress." ... Even if I can't play them for you anymore, yes, Tine, I will keep at it....

She was optimistic until the end, even though her body was getting weaker and weaker. Her strong heart kept her alive longer than expected. She still wanted to live so much.

Thank you that you existed.

(Re)discovering Germany as a production location, rethinking supply chains, strengthening digitization in and with SMEs - these measures are now important.

reindustrialisierung

Within a short period of time, the small Corona virus has exposed a great number of weaknesses in a wide variety of systems in society and in companies. Deficiencies that had been concealed or delayed for a long time are now coming to light with clear impact. The way we do business, the future strategy for Germany, needs to be fundamentally rethought.

The migration and outsourcing of production abroad within the last decades has led to a drain of know-how. This has led to a steadily growing disadvantage for the ability to innovate in Europe. The few remaining production sites in Europe are highly dependent on upstream suppliers. Corona has shown Europe how fragile the highly complex supply chains with long distances are and that they can easily lead to uncontrolled production stops. Long-distance supply chains and dependencies have made us inflexible. The examples of protective masks, pharmaceutical and hygiene articles alone are good illustrations of how much faster product development was adapted to changing market needs in Asia.

The virus will hopefully be overcome at some point. After-effects of the lockdown will still be felt well into next year, in particular due to a wave of insolvencies that is still expected and their delayed effects in the supply networks. Political risks and customs discussions in various parts of the world have also increased in recent years.

So what are the conclusions of a post-Corona world? A "business as usual" probably definitely not. Nature was temporarily relieved, especially by the massive decrease in road traffic. Saving aviation, which was already tax-subsidized before Corona, should not be our most urgent problem. The key issue in Europe, after all, is how we can better connect medium-sized companies in particular so that more cooperative and sustainable economic models emerge. Now is exactly the time to change course! Sustainable models are being discussed more and more, such as the common good economy. Many have understood that short-term shareholder happiness is not the only decisive factor, but that it is about doing justice to many stakeholders - customers, employees, cooperation partners and society. At this point, the SME sector is way ahead. What is needed is a new awareness of local and more resource-efficient international value creation. The technologies for this are ready.

Robotics and the Internet of Things (IoT), such as RFID, are making it possible for labor cost differences between continents to become increasingly irrelevant, through process automation and savings in logistics costs. They also make it possible to build on a strength of German companies: Quality. Microservices, web technology and cloud platforms enable the flexibility that Europe now needs. Different systems and companies can be linked together to form integrated systems within a very short time. And individual interests must increasingly give way to the interests of several. The time of rigid monoliths is over.

For policymakers, this means driving forward the long overdue massive focus of funding on innovations in the digital economy. This can only succeed in Germany if, on the one hand, the strongly represented SMEs are given more consideration in the funding projects. And on the other hand, the application companies are now empowered to be able to use already existing solutions quickly. The BITMi with its companies has extensive know-how in this area and can provide the appropriate suggestions, as the following examples show:

  • Cloud platforms based on microservices and web APIs and with instant data exchange in the supply chain without longstanding integration;
  • Easy and reliable integrations of new supply chains and use of IoT for error prevention rather than troubleshooting in supply chains, with integration of suppliers, manufacturing plants, logisticians and decentralized warehouses;
  • "Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment" solutions so that supplier, logistician and customer can see IMMEDIATE and automated inventory levels and withdrawals, combined with intelligent inventory management algorithms behind them;
  • RFID-enabled solutions for real-world omnichannel processes that dramatically reduce capital lockup by leveraging all inventory in the enterprise and provide real-time visibility into sales issues and opportunities;
  • Customer experience instead of just sales, i.e. using innovative solutions in retail such as self-checkout, RFID, extended counter and thus achieving to keep customers in brick-and-mortar retail while still providing the right products at the right time through the right information.

The list of these already existing solutions could be continued at will. So if the crisis had one good thing, it would be to use this opportunity to turn our digitization from head to toe and steer it in an economic and sustainable direction.

Ulla Popken

Due to the continuous growth of multi-channel commerce, the Popken Fashion Group, based in Rastede (Lower Saxony), decided to build a new modern logistics system. As in previous projects, the internationally successful company wanted to use RFID technology in the logistics warehouse to gain additional efficiency levers. In the end, the decision was made to repeatedly rely on the good partnership with syspro that had already been established in 2016 during the introduction of RFID technology in incoming and outgoing goods. The further developed solution for logistics control from syspro was used: the RFID tunnel. With the two RFID tunnels installed, the complete picked goods for the mail order business are now recorded, so that the quality of the delivery is increased many times over.

Schloss Fels Winery, one of Austria's largest wineries, now has end-to-end IT-based production control thanks to syspro's MES solution proSystem Food (also known as "proFood" for short). ProFood has been in use as a core system alongside SAP since 2006. After the conceptual design, the implementation took place in less than three months. Since the adaptation of the MES system "proFood", a complete traceability of all articles from the goods receipt over the complete production up to the goods issue is now IT-supported possible in the winery Schloss Fels. The MES solution starts in the complex grape reception and evaluation, which is now additionally controlled and to the advantage of all parties involved - both the winery and the grape suppliers.

On January 1st, 2020, the " Law for the Protection against Manipulation of Digital Basic Records" came into force. Hereby, the obligation to keep individual records for electronic cash register systems was tightened again.

With the "Principles for the proper keeping and storage of books, records and documents in electronic form and for data access" (GoBD for short), strict specifications for electronic cash register systems were already established in 2017. With a deadline of 01.01.2020, the legislator has now tightened these requirements once again. The aim here is to prevent subsequent manipulation of the recorded cash transactions and the associated tax evasion.

Starting this year, electronic recording systems must have a certified technical security device consisting of three components:

  • Security module: The security module ensures that cash register entries are logged at the start of the recording process and cannot be changed later without being detected.
  • Storage medium: The individual records are stored on the storage medium for the duration of the statutory retention period.
  • Unified digital interface: The digital interface is intended to ensure smooth data transmission, for auditing purposes.

The technical security device with which the records of the POS system are to be secured at the start of the recording process must be certified in accordance with the specifications of the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). However, there is no such certification requirement for the POS system. This must only have an interface to a certified security device. Even though the new law came into force on 01.01.2020 and therefore applies de facto to all electronic cash register systems, the absence of a technical security device should not be objected to by the tax office until 01.10.2020. A corresponding order was issued by the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) on 05.11.2019.

In recent days, seven states have already announced that their tax authorities will extend this deadline of non-objection due to Covid-19 to March 31, 2021, if the company can prove,

  • that the TSE has been bindingly ordered from a qualified cash register manufacturer

or

  • that the implementation of a cloud-based TSE is planned, but that this is demonstrably not yet available for the company.

Syspro's smart checkout solution

15.12.2020

After six months with a reduced sales tax rate, the rate will return to 19% in January. Studies had shown that the tax cut had not overly stimulated consumers to buy. Now many retailers are again faced with rewriting cash registers and labels. Price changes are relatively laborious processes. What technologies are actually helping retailers streamline these processes? Cloud-based checkout systems, electronic price tags and what else? We have compiled an overview of some of the solutions:

Selfcheckout:

The POS system for iOS and Android enables a fast checkout process according to your wishes - as a touch screen for checkout, customer display, barcode scanner, ...

The checkout is RFID- and EAN/GTIN-enabled and thus supports various omnichannel functions, such as dropshipping, click & collect, or in-store orders. Since the customer now "checks out himself", the staff saves time at the checkout and can use this time gained for customer advice, for example.

In addition, you gain full control over all sales and goods movements, cancellations and returns, as well as a permanent overview of the current stock levels in the stores and central warehouses. This way, out-of-stock situations can be reduced at the same time.

The self-checkout solution enables fast training thanks to direct and simple processes and equally fast transaction processing. It also allows you to capture customer data for individualized customer loyalty promotions - easily integrated with a CRM / loyalty card system.

Electronic Shelf Labels:

Manual product labeling is one of the biggest time wasters for staff at the POS. As a result, it blocks valuable resources for increasing sales through better customer service. It also blocks truly dynamic pricing, which would allow you to control promotions and targeted sales at the touch of a button. Here, too, online retail has so far been far ahead.

Electronic shelf labels change everything: Price mapping is performed without manual intervention by a central control system. With a dynamic pricing policy, you flexibly optimize your contribution margins and staff thus gain time for each individual customer.

At the same time, you establish the prerequisites for a further strategic step: In the coupling with RFID near-field recognition, regular customers can be identified directly at the product, who are linked to your loyalty system via app. You can retain and inspire these VIP customers with personalized pricing.

Price Change Solution:

Price changes are often confusing and involve a lot of effort. Employees have to relabel as quickly as possible without errors. This inevitably leads to errors, you lose track of what's going on and, in the worst case, discussions arise at the checkout if the label price differs from the price in the POS system.

Automating these processes saves time and ensures less stressed employees.

Syspro's price change solution takes the information about promotions or similar from the merchandise management system and is thus always on the same level as the POS system. When the products are scanned, the system recognizes whether a change has been made and prints a new label - or not. This means that this process does not have to be carried out by specialist personnel and the re-labeling can be controlled centrally.

The result: fast, error-free relabeling, no fraud due to manual relabeling of red price labels, generally visually higher quality price changes and thus - satisfied employees.

More and more fashion brand suppliers are relying on the benefits of RFID. Among the 30 largest European suppliers in this area, more than two-thirds are already using the technology.

In the fall of 2020, the trade magazine TextilWirtschaft published the ranking of the largest European fashion brand suppliers by sales (based on the year 2019 or the corresponding fiscal year). It is striking that a large proportion of the top-ranked brands use RFID. What is particularly remarkable, however, is that the majority of the companies in this field that use RFID technology have also increased their sales compared to the previous year, in some cases significantly - in other words, they have been more successful than average.

First place in the ranking is occupied by Inditex from Spain. With brands such as Zara, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Pull & Bear and others, the company generated 28.3 billion euros, around 8.2 percent more than in the previous year. Inditex has been using RFID for several years and has equipped all Zara logistics centers and hundreds of stores with RFID technology. For Pablo Isla, CEO of Inditex, the implementation of RFID is "one of the biggest changes in the way we do business - the most successful investment in the company's history." For Isla, it is also clear that the group's investments in stores, logistics and technology have been the basis for the good sales results.

This certainly makes Inditex one of the pioneers in fashion retailing. But numerous other brand suppliers such as Adidas, Bestseller, Burberry, C&A, Calzedonia, H&M, Hermès, Kering, LPP, LVMH, Mango, Marks & Spencer, Moncler, Mulliez, OTB, Pentland, Prada and Tommy Hilfiger have also been using RFID to process crucial information in their business operations, and some of them have been doing so for longer than Inditex.

The sports retailer Decathlon, which belongs to the French family-owned company Mulliez, and the Polish group LPP (Reserved, Tallinder, etc.) answer the question of whether RFID has made a positive contribution to the companies' sales development with a clear "yes". LPP from Gdansk had even proclaimed 2019 as the RFID year for the group brand Reserved. The group increased sales by 12.6 percent. The situation is similar at Decathlon. In Germany, the French brand was able to increase its sales by 26 percent.

RFID technology enables each item of clothing to be individually identified using radio frequency waves. The corresponding information is stored on a chip, the RFID tag. Retail companies that use RFID can thus not only permanently evaluate inventory information from the stores, but also optimize their entire logistics chain. This has concrete implications for the fashion customer, or as Nike CEO, Mike Parker, said in August 2019: "RFID is quickly becoming the most precise tool in our arsenal to meet the specific needs of an individual consumer at exactly the right time." Put another way: The secret to success is having the merchandise you need in the right place and available at all times - unless the collection is sold out everywhere.

Certainly, RFID is not solely responsible for the success and sales increases of the most successful European fashion brand suppliers, but in the competition for customers willing to buy, RFID-supported inventory management obviously occupies a key position in the fashion business. After all, customers buy where they want and only when the goods are really available. This is precisely why omnichannel commerce is now an important driver for the use of RFID.

Many German companies are lagging behind in digitization by international standards. This is particularly true for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which form the backbone of the German economy.

For this reason, the German government launched a new funding program for the digitization of SMEs in September: "Digital Jetzt - Investitionsförderung für KMU" (Digital Now - Investment Support for SMEs). This program could be an attractive additional incentive for digitization, especially for RFID projects. Unfortunately, the federal government is not providing sufficient funds. Just a few hours after the first opening of the registration portal, the funding pot was empty. The reopening was then postponed until the end of November. In the meantime, we are in mid-January and the registration page states that a draw will be held monthly on the 15th among those who have registered. For the draw on Jan. 15, €5 million was available and that was with 8,000 registered companies. In other words: there was a 1:80 chance of being drawn for funding. Too bad! Perhaps the German government will realize in the course of the next year that digitization is not a game of chance and that it should take digitization seriously.

Since we do not want to give up hope and the funding program is cleverly structured in terms of content, we would like to present it at this point.

The guidelines for the funding program stipulate that funding is primarily provided for investments in hardware and software for the purpose of

  • Digitization of business processes
  • Establishment of digital business models
  • Increasing IT security.

Explicitly mentioned as eligible for funding are Big Data and sensor technology (e.g. RFID).

In particular, the following are not supported

  • Standard software (e.g. operating systems and MS Office)
  • Standard hardware (e.g. notebooks)
  • Services (exception: training, prerequisite QM certification)

In order for the funding to be approved, the applicant must submit a digitization plan that describes how the requested investments will help with the above-mentioned digitization goals. In our view, there are 2 options for this:

  • The company writes their own digitization plan.
The company hires external specialists. For this purpose, there are specialized consultants distributed regionally who can bill their services, for example, via a grant from BAFA or via the "Go digital" funding program. If necessary, we can provide the relevant contacts.

How much funding does "Digital Now" provide?

The funding rates vary according to the size of the company (number of employees) and region. In addition, there are bonus funding rates for individual topics, so that the funding rates can be 30% to 70% until 30.6.2021. From 1.7.2021, these 10% points will be lower. In total, the funding can amount to up to €50,000.

A cleverly chosen path with, unfortunately, a bit too few provisions... Are there alternatives to digitization? Probably mostly "no". Are there alternative funding programs for digitization? "Yes and no" - there are, for example, a great many regional funding pots - depending on the federal state. The sky was gray, the mood was good on Thursday morning, August 19th, 2021. The occasion that brought together the artist Christian Awe, Michael Grunst, Mayor of Berlin Lichtenberg, Harald Dittmar, Managing Director of sys-pro GmbH and Andreas Plank, Berliner Familienfreunde e.V., in front of Awe's artwork "express yourself" at the Kulturhaus Karlshorst was a great one.

At this location Christian Awe handed over the first pictures of his limited charity edition. With the purchase of one of the 100 pictures, syspro supports the campaign "#100 Voices against Child Poverty", the proceeds of which will in this case go to the Berliner Familienfreunde e.V. This will help support children and young people from Lichtenberg whose everyday lives are made more difficult due to child poverty.

CharityAwe

Since May 2021, new large-format murals have been on display on the exterior front of the Kulturhaus Karlshorst at Treskowallee 112 in Berlin-Lichtenberg. The artist Christian Awe created them especially for this location. As part of his commitment to the campaign "#100 Voices against Child Poverty", Christian Awe has now exclusively produced a limited edition of 100 copies of the artwork. The title of the charity edition underlines the idea of the campaign: the English words "express yourself" stand for living out and expressing one's own thoughts, individuality and creativity. And to have the necessary freedom and opportunities to do so.

Andreas Plank was delighted to be able to use the donation to expand the services offered at the family center. "It is particularly important to us that all families can use the offers free of charge. Examples of this are the learning aids for elementary school students and the family relaxation courses," said Planck. "A family center with exclusion-free offers directly in the neighborhood with the families, where everyone equally finds help, feels comfortable and gets to know each other, that is supported by the donation and for that we say thank you!"

"We as sys-pro GmbH and also the Lions Club Berlin-Hohenschönhausen have been supporting the Family Friends in its extremely important work with children and young people in the district for a long time," says Harald Dittmar. "And now we are pleased that we can make a further contribution by supporting this great, inspiring campaign. I hope that this idea finds great support and, above all, is an impetus for more good ideas to be born and then implemented to make our city more livable for everyone."

Christian Awe said that within his possibilities as an artist and also in his experience as a father, he wants to do something to create perspectives and help children to live a carefree childhood.

  CharityGruppeAwe1

About the artist and the campaign (from press release Bezirksamt Lichtenberg 20.8.21):

In addition to his artistic work in Germany and abroad, Christian Awe is involved in a variety of social and cultural projects - in Germany, the Middle East and Africa. The focus here is on education, integration and health issues. As an ambassador, he now also supports the campaign "#100 Voices against Child Poverty" launched by the Berlin-Lichtenberg district. During the Long Night of Pictures on September 3, 2021, interested visitors will have the opportunity to talk directly with Christian Awe. The artist will be on site at the Kulturhaus Karlshorst and will be happy to provide information about his mural "ex-press yourself" and the charity edition in a personal conversation. In addition, other works of art by Awe will be on display on the 1st floor of the Kulturhaus.

If you are interested in supporting the campaign by buying a copy, you can order hand-painted, signed and numbered copies from the artist. The pictures measure 26 x 50 cm and cost 450 euros plus shipping when unframed or 550 euros when framed. The editions can be ordered at This email address is being protected from spambots. Saving the climate with a bike?
The "Stadtradeln" initiative ventures a step towards mobility change - and syspro joins in.

Stadtradeln has been pursuing its mission for many years: paving the way for more cycling in Germany. And of course that works best in a competition that has the goal of covering as many kilometers as possible by bike for three weeks.

This not only encourages people to get on their bikes and pedal hard, but also has a long-term mission. Making the switch from car to bike more attractive requires the support of policymakers, who must develop the framework conditions.

It also motivated our employees to come together in a team to take part in the competition and encourage each other in the process.

For this purpose, all volunteer cyclists have downloaded an app that tracks the kilometers they have completed. These routes can then be examined anonymously, providing information that can be used to improve the cycling infrastructure. These results can then be forwarded directly to the respective municipalities.

We think so: A clever idea to strengthen cycling, to motivate each other in the community to more climate protection and, by the way, to do something for your own health.

For those who still want to join in: www.stadtradeln.de provides more information and the opportunity to register.

For the 20th time, the annual "Tour de Franz" took place in early September in Carinthia, Austria, from Pörtschach to Finkenstein. The "Tour de Franz" is a sporting initiative of the Olympic skiing champion Franz Klammer and other celebrities.

syspro is well connected in Austria and so it is not surprising that we support the "Tour de Franz" charitable cycling.

In the process, 120 participants, including numerous professional cyclists, drove around 90 kilometers through the beautiful Austrian countryside and collected money from the supporters of the bike tour.

The hard earned money is now donated by the person responsible for the campaign, Franz Klammer, to Carinthian children and families in need. This year even twice as much came together as in 2020: 72.000€.

We are very happy about the success of the initiative and proud to be one of the partners of such a great event. Congratulations!

With the triumph of omnichannel commerce, transparency and accuracy of item inventories became crucial to a brand's commercial success.

By now, almost every brand has understood the importance of reducing the so-called "out-of-stock situations". The causes of out-of-stock situations include both missing items and items in the wrong place. RFID enables more sales per customer visit with hyper-fast inventory capture, resulting in revenue increases of at least 2%, averaging 7%.

Do you also occasionally have customers tell you that you have supplied them with too few items? Yet you're pretty sure that's not true? One of our customers wanted to know exactly that. With the introduction of our RFID tunnels in the outgoing goods department, all shipments are now automatically checked for completeness. No more mistakes could happen and if necessary our customer can prove this to his customers.

Vice versa, the RFID tunnels can also help you already with the control in the incoming goods department. Various processes can be made efficient or even automated with RFID - whether with automated controls, transfer bookings or in the form of robots for inventory recording.

RFID also helps you detect the causes of errors in logistics or production. This is precisely why RFID is already being used at various stages of production at one of our customers. If errors are found during quality control or returns, the causes can be discovered retroactively to ensure that these errors are not repeated if possible.

Outdoor Fashion + Equipment: digital transparency and measurable added value across the entire supply chain!

For many of our customers, supply chains in the omnichannel era remain a complex and sensitive topic. On the one hand, there are production partners and brand owners who want to work increasingly efficiently, transparently and with less risk - and on the other hand, there are retailers and their customers for whom supply capability and inventory security are the most important issues.

Does it all fit together? For sure!

After all, the central point of modern process networking is the data that we can seamlessly record via RFID at all points in the supply chain and make available in real time via the cloud. Based on this, inventory management, delivery processes, returns handling and store processes are newly networked, with all partners benefiting from the sharing of valuable data. And the employees also benefit: low barrier, error-free and time-saving workflows.

And what else does zero-error logistics based on RFID offer? For example, measurable added value through cost reductions, productivity gains, increased sales and risk reduction.

What it is all about in detail and why the all-in-one solution principle by syspro works so well, you can find out in our brochure, which you can download a little further down.
